What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a specialized approach that can help when traditional talk therapy falls short of creating true, deep healing. Traumatic experiences can cause certain memories to get “stuck” in the brain, frozen in their raw and painful state. Unlike regular memories, which fade and integrate over time, traumatic memories stay vivid, intense, and sometimes overwhelming. This happens because trauma disrupts the brain’s natural way of processing information, leaving the memory stored in the emotional centers of the brain as if the event is still happening.
EMDR works by using bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements—to help the brain “reprocess” these stuck memories. This approach unlocks the body’s natural healing mechanisms, allowing traumatic memories to be stored as past events instead of present threats. Over time, the emotional charge fades, helping you release past trauma, break free from painful cycles, and regain a sense of balance and control.
EMDR Therapy—a path to healing that gets results.

If you are:
Having trouble breaking from the past
EMDR trauma therapy helps you process past trauma by targeting the triggers that bring you back to painful memories, allowing your brain to reframe and heal these experiences.
EMDR therapy reduces the heightened stress response in your nervous system, helping you feel more grounded and less reactive to reminders of past trauma.
Feeling stuck in a cycle of negative self-talk
EMDR treatment helps you process and release deep-seated feelings of inadequacy, shame, and self-loathing by addressing the root causes of these negative beliefs.
With EMDR, you’ll replace harmful thoughts like “I’m not enough” with more adaptive, empowering beliefs such as “I am worthy” and “I am safe now,” fostering a healthier sense of self.
Controlled by addictive behaviors
By helping you process and heal from past experiences, EMDR therapy targets the underlying emotional triggers and traumas that lead to maladaptive behaviors, such as addiction.
As these emotional wounds are addressed, you can cultivate healthier coping skills, transforming addictive behaviors into more adaptive and constructive strategies for managing stress and emotions.
Healing beyond words.

about Us
Why Work With Integrative Creative Therapy
Our minds are powerful, but our bodies hold the wisdom and unresolved past. It takes a holistic approach to truly heal and change.
At Integrative Creative Therapy, we go beyond traditional talk therapy by engaging you cognitively, somatically, emotionally, and creatively. Our role isn’t to fix you, but to help you unburden past pain, expand your emotional capacity, and connect to your healthy core (the Self-Energy) for a more authentic life.
We believe creative expression is the portal to your inner world. Through music, art, movement, and other creative modalities, we help you explore and heal in ways that can be both liberating and enlightening. This approach is particularly powerful for teens, children, and individuals who find traditional therapy limiting, as it bypasses the constraints of verbal communication to access deep healing.
With over 20 years of combined experience, we provide trauma and neurodivergence-informed care using evidence-based approaches like EMDR, IFS, somatic work, and Creative Arts Therapy. Our practice is built on the understanding that everyone has the innate ability to heal when they feel safe, seen, and accepted.
When you’re ready to make meaningful change, we’re here to help you move forward with more vitality, flow, and joy.

Our Approach
How EMDR Therapy Works
At Integrative Creative Therapy, our EMDR treatment sessions are personalized and trust-based, often incorporating complementary methods like Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic practices, and creative arts therapy to support your healing on multiple levels. We’ll help you reconnect with your true self and move forward with resilience and clarity.
1. History & Planning
The first step begins with building trust and gaining a clear view of the patterns, beliefs, and emotions that shape you. This lets us personalize our approach and ensures you feel safe and supported.
2. Preparation
We will review the EMDR process and introduce coping strategies and relaxation techniques to help you manage emotional distress during sessions.
3. Assessment
We pinpoint specific EMDR targets, such as distressing memories, negative beliefs, or difficult emotions, to establish clear goals for our work together.
4. Desensitization
Through guided eye movements or other techniques, the identified targets are processed, reducing their emotional intensity and enabling you to face them with greater ease. The ultimate goal is to lessen the distress tied to the memory.
5. Installation
At this stage, we reinforce positive beliefs and emotions to replace the negative, fostering a more resilient and empowered mindset.
6. Body Scan
We identify and release any remaining physical tension or discomfort linked to the targets, ensuring your mind and body are in harmony during healing.
7. Closure
Each session concludes with ensuring you feel stable and grounded, incorporating relaxation techniques and planning self-care between sessions.
8. Re-evaluation
We evaluate your progress and the impact of our sessions, identifying any additional targets and ensuring positive changes are integrated into your daily life.
For those seeking deeper healing, we also offer a 10-week Trauma Solution Program, combining EMDR with Internal Family Systems (IFS) to tackle complex issues like addiction, self-loathing, and perfectionism. Contact Us.

Questions About EMDR Therapy
Why does EMDR help when other treatments haven’t?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is especially effective for trauma and PTSD because it targets traumatic memories directly. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—like eye movements—to help the brain reprocess and integrate distressing memories. This approach reduces the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, promotes the installation of positive self-beliefs, and supports healing in a structured, safe environment. Research also suggests that EMDR activates the brain’s natural processing abilities, which may facilitate deeper recovery.
Can EMDR be done online?
Yes! Research shows that online sessions are as effective as in-person therapy. Through secure video conferencing, we can guide you through the process from the comfort and safety of your home. This option is ideal if you have mobility concerns, live far from our practice, or prefer the convenience of remote therapy. We offer EMDR therapy online in both New York and Texas.
How many EMDR sessions do I need to start feeling better?
The number of EMDR sessions needed varies based on individual factors. For single-event traumas, some people feel relief in 4-8 sessions. For complex trauma or childhood abuse, 12-20 sessions may be needed. Factors like the nature of the trauma, personal resilience, therapy goals, and session frequency all play a role. Typically, initial improvements are seen within the first 4-8 sessions, with significant progress often observed by 8-12 sessions. Complex cases may require longer treatment.
How do I know if EMDR will work for me?
EMDR is particularly effective for trauma and PTSD, so it may be right for you if your primary concerns are related to past traumatic experiences. To determine if EMDR is a good fit, a therapist will evaluate your mental health history and symptoms. You’ll also need to feel ready to face distressing memories and have some level of emotional stability. Starting with a few initial sessions can help you and your therapist assess its effectiveness. Open communication and regular feedback will ensure the therapy is adapted to your needs.
Do you combine EMDR with other approaches?
Yes, we often combine EMDR with other therapies, such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic approaches, for a more comprehensive treatment. IFS helps clients work with different “parts” of themselves that may be impacted by trauma, while somatic techniques address physical sensations and stored energy in the body. By integrating these approaches, we can support both the cognitive and physical aspects of trauma, helping you achieve a more holistic and lasting healing experience.
